Remembering

As a people, we have a duty to remember the following, among others:

1. Marcos dictatorship and kleptocracy
2. Land Reform, Hacienda Luisita and Mendiola Massacre
3. The Plunder and Profligacy of the Estrada Government
4. The Fertilizer Fund Scam
5. Hello Garci
6. The Abalos COMELEC
7. The military human rights abuses
8. NBN ZTE deal
9. The GMA-Ampatuan Massacre
10. The Leftist Purges
11. The Peace Bond Racket
12. The Rightist Power Grabs

Punishment is the beginning of reform! Unless we as a people can bring those who abused, looted , murdered our countrymen and dishonored us to jail, we will not have justice that will finally set us on the road to stability, peace and prosperity. Until the time that we as a people become capable of punishing the guilty, our country will remain as the land of a plundered people.

Three Books

Just some more crazy ideas for three books. Plus some earlier ideas in the back burner, I hope I get to write at least one of them. BUT I need a collaborator.

1. A C---'s Take
2. J----e Y--- W-- to B----r H----h
3. P--- Y--- W-- T- languages

Enstakement

"Enstakement" is the task of creating, broadening or deepening a person's sense of ownership of a particular social enterprise undertaken by a group of people.

Enstakement is the key to make an organization truly democratic by ensuring that all members of an enterprise are engaged or involved in the pursuit of the goals of their organization and most important, that they participate in the benefits that their efforts attain.

A Chevening Evening

Last night our Chevening 2008 Batch had a reunion dinner with no less than the new UK ambassador to the Philippines Stephen Lillie as special guest. It was really a great honor for our batch to have the ambassador with us and for us to know him better and up close. His coming to our reunion underscored and convinced us of  the importance of the Chevening Fellowship as a flagship program of the UK Government which we had the great fortune of being a part of..

Frankly though, I had always felt a little guilty that the first thing I did after my Chevening Fellowship was to quit my job for which I got the Fellowship in the first place. On our last day in class, our course director even had only very positive and encouraging words for me. If only he knew what was already in my mind then.

But I did not quit my job on a whim. Actually it was my fellowship experience that gave me the courage to act on my conviction. Even before I left for the fellowship, I had been questioning my work and participation in a project that if carried out as it was, I felt will only produce either martyrs or clowns. With the GMA – Ampatuan massacre occuring just almost two years later, I feel vindicated in my decision.

Still I am hoping that one day, I will get a chance to be engaged in genuine peace and democracy building work again in Mindanano, particularly in the ARMM where I can have a chance to put to use whatever knowledge and insights I gained through my Chevening experience.

I hope someday, I can show that British money was not wasted on me.

“Hi, long time no see!”
Having dinner with a queen’s diplomat was memorable enough but our night was made really unforgettable by one of our batchmates who came late. She mistook the ambassador for someone she had met some time before in the embassy and so when she sat beside him, she casually told him, “Hi, long time no see” and then proceeded to pat him on the shoulder. The good ambassador graciously repeated her greeting to her and we were all impressed that they had already established a friendly rapport in the short time since the ambassador came to the country.

But it was only after the ambassador left that our batchmate sounding horrified, very contritely apologized to us for her earlier behavior as she explained to us that the ambassador looked like someone she knew from the embassy. It was not until someone asked a question to the ambassador and began with “Mr. Ambassador” that she realized who she was sittting with. I almost choked on my food when I heard this and we ended the night rolling with laughter.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

A Firecracker Free New Year

Towards every end of the year there is a campaign to stop or avoid using firecrackers and to greet the New Year more safely and responsibly.

I support this campaign. However, to all those who would like to see this happen, I say that the CAMPAIGN FOR A SAFER, MORE INTELLIGENT AND RESPONSIBLE WELCOME OF THE NEW YEAR should begin today.

Apart from the shock and scare tactic of the Department of Health, I think other more traditional forms of persuasion like endorsements and band wagon effect should be tried.

The folly and harmfulness of firecrackers should also be stressed at all possible occasion especially after every global warming related natural disaster such as strong typhoons and floodings.

And lastly, I think those people who want other people to give up their firecrackers should also present alternatives to these people instead of just asking them to stop. This of course will require imagination and hard work . But I believe this can be done.

The good news is that in some areas in the country, this is already being done e.g. new year barangay picnics, mall sponsored parties etc.

Presidentiable Paputoks

* Content picked up from texter

Since 2010 is an election year, maybe it is only expected that some people greet the new year with politikal paputoks. From a text joker:

Question: Alam mo ba yong paputok na HELLO NOYNOY? Pagkalaki laki pero pag nasindihan, supot.

E yong paputok na IKAW BA YAN GIBO? Kahit gaano ang plugging, wala pa ring bumibili.

Other firecrackers: BABALIK SI ERAP (old stock from 1998)

SHOW ME D' MANNY (buy 2 take 1 and if you light it, Alan Peter Cayetano explodes)

JJJAMBY (repackaged Crying Cow)

FLASH GORDON (paputok na walang pumapansin)

JC DE LOSES REYES (sparklers for losers)

EDDIE V (new name for watusi)
