A Firecracker Free New Year

Towards every end of the year there is a campaign to stop or avoid using firecrackers and to greet the New Year more safely and responsibly.

I support this campaign. However, to all those who would like to see this happen, I say that the CAMPAIGN FOR A SAFER, MORE INTELLIGENT AND RESPONSIBLE WELCOME OF THE NEW YEAR should begin today.

Apart from the shock and scare tactic of the Department of Health, I think other more traditional forms of persuasion like endorsements and band wagon effect should be tried.

The folly and harmfulness of firecrackers should also be stressed at all possible occasion especially after every global warming related natural disaster such as strong typhoons and floodings.

And lastly, I think those people who want other people to give up their firecrackers should also present alternatives to these people instead of just asking them to stop. This of course will require imagination and hard work . But I believe this can be done.

The good news is that in some areas in the country, this is already being done e.g. new year barangay picnics, mall sponsored parties etc.
